Human Trafficking: Case Studies

Case 1: Dismantling Social Myths & Misconceptions

Shila (changed name), a 27-year-old resident of Barai village, Dumka district, faced domestic violence and societal stigma due to myths about her inability to conceive after eight years of marriage. Forced to leave her in-laws, she joined an SHG group under SMP’s rehabilitation efforts facilitated by Lahanti. Through Gram Sabha meetings, the project team sensitized her husband, Mangal, and village leaders about medical fertility and the consequences of domestic violence. The couple reconciled, pursued fertility treatment, and Shila secured a job with an NGO. She now lives free from harassment and is treated respectfully by her community.

Case 2: Supporting a Victim’s Family

Varun Hansda (changed name), a contract laborer from Kathikund block, died in a road accident while working in Sikkim. The contractor refused to cover transportation costs or pay dues to his family. Lahanti, with community support, approached the Labor office in Dumka, leveraging Varun’s E-Shram card. The office held the contractor accountable, ensuring the company covered transportation and wage payments. Additionally, the Labor office provided INR 10,000 for funeral expenses and INR 3,33,000 as insurance compensation to Varun’s family, who expressed gratitude for Lahanti’s support during their hardship.
